What's in a name?

Naming a thing is hard. Real hard.

Think about the last time you had to name something that was important, like a pet or a child? It turns out, naming a brewery can be just as hard, especially when four people are involved. You have to commit to this thing, this name, forever.

After weeks of conversations and late-night texts, we finally settled on a name that we felt meant something to us, Lithology Brewing Co. It blended our scientific backgrounds (Lee and Kevin are geologists), and paid homage to our Long Island roots. Lithology, a geological term, is the study of the physical characteristics of rock and sediment. Besides forming the land we walk on, rock and sediment are earth’s natural water filters. Long Island’s aquifers supply the water that makes for our region’s famous pizza and bagels (and beer!). The first “Li” is also used to highlight Long Island in our logo.

And now, that you have some idea of how dorky we are, here is some more cool info on Long Island’s geology!

Long Island was formed primarily by glacier deposits. As glaciers moved over this area, they dumped sediment (rocks, sand, etc) as they melted. The heavier stuff, like boulders and rocks, stayed more or less where they were deposited at Long Island’s north shore. The smaller, lighter sediment was pushed along with the glacial melt, eventually settling on the south shore of Long Island. Ever notice how the north shore has rocky, pebbly beaches and the south shore is sandy?

Long Island has a few important and prolific aquifers, from which we get our drinking water. The three most important Long Island aquifers are the Upper Glacial Aquifer, the Lloyd Aquifer, and the Magothy Aquifer. The Magothy Aquifer is the largest aquifer, and where we came up with the name for our Magothy Mango Wheat Ale, a new 2017 brew that can be found at our tasting room.

As mentioned above, Long Island’s aquifers have been attributed to enhancing some of our local cuisine - pizza and bagels. Here is a list of our favorites:
